Americanism

The Americanism Essay Contest was created to teach students the value of patriotism and what it means to be Americans. Thousands of students across our Republic participate in the program each year and help promote a lifelong respect of our flag and country.

Americanism

Did you know that on Memorial Day the American Flag should be flown at half-staff until noon? If you have a short pole and can’t hang at half-staff, you can place a black ribbon at the top to hang down with the Flag. You can purchase these ribbons from the American Flag Foundation.

Americanism Notes

As I write this over our Memorial Day weekend, I’m reminded of one of the core mission statements of Americanism: Promote respect for our American Flag. As we reflect on the millions of American Patriots who gave their lives to protect our freedom and our flag over the past 245 years, we fly our Flag with special respect and pride on their behalf.

We have a number of national holidays coming up when our Flag should also be flown: June 14th, Flag Day (and President Trump’s birthday), July 4th/Independence Day, July 27th/National Korean War Vets Armistice Day, Sept. 6th/Labor Day, Sept. 17th/Constitution Day, and Oct. 11th/Columbus Day. A full list of Flag holidays can be found at The American Flag Foundation.

The American Flag Foundation is a great resource to learn about everything regarding our great Flag, flag etiquette, holidays, etc. It was chartered in 1982 as a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization to ensure that the true meaning of the American Flag is recognized.
