Caring for America

The National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) established the Caring for America program in 1999 to encourage state federations and clubs to actively participate in at least one community service program. Caring for America is based on the belief that problems can be solved most effectively through the generosity and combined energies of individual citizens. 

The SRRWF Caring for America projects include support for Vet Connect of Sonoma County, The Living Room, Annual Cookies for Cops, and the reading program at the Kid Street Charter School. 

The mission of Vet Connect is to provide outreach to all former military and their families and assist them in obtaining access to services and benefits. The SRRWF donates seasonal clothing, but especially in the winter months, provides  warm coats, socks, sweaters, rain gear, beanies, scarves, jeans, shoes, and even sleeping bags.

The Living Room provides food and housing to Sonoma County women and their children who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. We donated both practical and stylish lightly-used clothing, acquired from our 2021 Yard Sale, to include jeans, tops, shoes, dresses, jackets, sweaters, and comfortable sweats. Also in 2021 for our Purse Project, we collected 20 pristine handbags, and a team of four members filled each with cosmetics, masks, practical toiletries, personal products, toothbrush and toothpaste, a beautiful scarf, and a crisp new $5 bill. The team presented the purses to staff the week of Thanksgiving. We also donated a beautiful gift basket valued at $300 for The Living Room’s annual fundraiser gala.

During our annual July Cookies for Cops, members bake or buy dozens of cookies, muffins, scones, cupcakes, or purchase chips, soft drinks, and other snacks. Teams deliver carloads of goodies to the police, sheriff, CHP, and fire departments all over the county to show our appreciation for the men and women who serve to protect us. We “Back the Blue!” They thank us profusely with emails, notes, and phone calls. SRRWF has donated dozens of appropriate books to the Kid Street Learning Center (charter school). Six of our members joined the tutoring program and visited their students on a weekly basis where they practiced reading, spelling, and even cursive writing!
